Indaba of science and technology policy, declaring a new paradigm for sciectific culture.
= Science is understanding, not knowledge.
Professor Bum-joon Kim (the Dept. of Physics, SKKU), who serves as a science communicator, made a meaningful comment regarding scientific culture during a indaba of science and technology policy held at the InterContinental Hotel in Seoul on July 5.
"Science is not just a list of knowledge," he said. "Science is completely different from memorization. It's urgent to draw experience from knowledge we already know."
Prof. Kim said, "Everyone should have an interest in science and reach the core culture through a process of insight. This process is 'popularization of science'." And he said "It should be possible for many people to understand science through natural processes, away from knowledge-oriented, solitary investigation.", adding that "now our country is faced with a situation where science has to be popularized."
For 'popularization of science,' Prof. Kim said, scientists themselves should come down (to where the public is). He reiterated the importance of active communication with the public.
