- Prof. Jaesook YUN developed Asymmetric Hydroboration of 1,1-Disubstituted Alkenes by Copper Catalysi
- A research team led by Prof. Jaesook YUN (Dept. of Chemistry) developed the asymmetric hydroboration of 1,1-disubstituted alkenes by copper catalysis. This research was published in the Journal of the American Chemical Society (IF: 13.858) as of 4th October, with the title "Copper-Catalyzed Enantioselective Hydroboration of Unactivated 1,1-Disubstituted Alkenes." This work presents the first highly enantioselective hydroboration of 1,1-dialkylsubstituted alkenes, which has not been solved for last 60 years since the Nobel Laureate H. C. BROWN reported the first asymmetric hydroboration. The method allows facile preparation of enantiomerically-enriched chiral alkyl boron compounds from 1,1-disubstituted alkenes. This work has provided several important clues that could truly be a big step in this research field. Prof. YUN said, "Our strategy will provide a useful synthetic tool for drug or natural product synthesis." This work has been recently selected for the Highlights of Organic Process Research & Development (IF: 2.857) by a group of industrial chemists who evaluated the work as a versatile and practical solution that should find many uses. The highlight will be published in November, 2017. This research was supported by the National Research Foundation of Korea (NRF) and the Basic Research Laboratory (BRL) Program.

- New Year's Message from the President of SKKU, Kyu Sang CHUNG
- Dear Sungkyun Family! The eventful year of 2017 that saw many issues and changes within the country, has passed and the year of 2018 has come. 2018 is the year of the Golden Dog as well as the year of 得意之秋 which means all wishes come true. I sincerely hope that all SKKU members’ dreams and wishes are realized in accordance with the meaning of 2018. Since SKKU declared ‘VISION 2020+’ as a blueprint of SKKU’s vision last year it has shown outstanding achievement. In particular, SKKU has expanded its value as a global leading research-oriented university by publishing over 5,200 articles at the famous scientific journal, Science Citation Index Expanded (SCIE). Our research competence is recognized from various outcomes such as No.2 in Korea for citation counts for top 1% research papers, largest number of awardees (3 people) for Highly Cited Researchers in 2017, the only known Korean awardee (Prof. Nam Gyu PARK) for “2017 Potential recipients of the Nobel Prize", and more. Also, SKKU also have strengthened its brand value as a global leading university by receiving high rankings in various evaluations; placing No.1 Korean private comprehensive university, 108th in QS world university rankings and 111th in THE, No.1 in NCSI for 11 consecutive years, No.1 in the job employment rate (76.4%) for 3 consecutive years, and more. Furthermore, SKKU is putting effort to promote new technology and investment by establishing AI Convergence Center which will lead the 4th Industrial Revolution and Kingo Investment Partners, a venture capital made by SKKU alumnus’ companies. When I was appointed as a President of SKKU, I promised to improve results by building a solid foundation at my 1st year. During my presidency, I have been pushing for New Challenge Project for 5 core fields: Software and Convergence Education, Research Competence, Global Alliance, Industrial-Academic Cooperation, and Management Innovation, and achieved many fruitful performance. I will give my best effort to complete projects that we have been working on. I believe the outstanding results that SKKU has shown were achieved by our three-in-one system of university, foundation, and alumnus who have given their best efforts. I would like to express my sincere appreciation for all of the Sungkyun members: professors, staff, students, university foundation, and alumnus who gave their dedication and passion for the development of SKKU. I would like to ask for passion, active participation, and continuous innovation of all members in order to become a world top institution beyond the limits and crisis that our university is confronting. Again, thank you very much for all the supports and dedication; and I wish all of you good health, happiness, and success in the coming year. January 1st, 2018 Kyu Sang CHUNG, The President of SKKU

- Sungkyunkwan University Professor Pil-joon Seo, an awardee of Seven Korean Young Researchers
- Seven Korean young researchers attracted attention from the world The National Research Foundation of Korea (the chief director Mu-je Jo) and Elsevier (the chairman Yeong-seok) selected seven new researchers with world-class research competitiveness and held an awards ceremony on the 6th. Elsevier is the world's largest publisher of academic research. This year 's selection criteria for new researchers is limited to researchers who are Korean nationals under the age of 39 and who have received a degree in Korea and belong to domestic research institutes. The National Research Foundation of Korea and Elsevier selected excellent researchers through analysis and verification of outstanding papers and analyzed the influence of which countries, institutions and researchers were cited in the papers on life sciences, natural sciences, engineering, and humanities and social studies. Sungkyunkwan University Professor Pil-joon Seo, an awardee in the field of science engineering, studied 'the stability of plants biological clock'. Professor Seo has suggested that various epigenetic inheritance mechanisms, such as histone acetylation, histone methylation, and chromatin remodeling, are directly involved in controlling plant biological clocks.
