"Foreigners’ SKKU Life" Professor ROTT Carsten
Last summer, summer special courses of the Department of Physics were held in which we invite scholars from our country and abroad. Department of Physics Professor ROTT Carsten was the interviewee "Foreigners’ SKKU Life" this time. He is doing astronomical particle research in physics and IceCube neutrino detector which is the largest neutrino detector in the world. We have interviewed him asking his foreign life as a foreigner from Germany.
Before coming to Korea, he was a senior researcher at Ohio State University. But he wanted to stop the study in conjunction with thought of what only he can do, The place gave him a chance to fulfill that dream was SKKU. he learned about our school while participating workshop held in Tokyo. There, he met a professor of SKKU and heard stories about our school. He was looking for the place to achieve his goal and expected to come to our school. Carsten then faced the news that he could come to our school Sungkyunkwan University becoming a leading university. He also be able to have opportunity to be more international. Carsten thought his research program goes well with goal of SKKU and support for science in Korea is very attractive.
He said that strengths of South Korea are we knows points to where the investment and recognize the value of education and science. Although many studies of other countries are experiencing difficulties with budget shortfalls, South Korea, tend to invest in science is much more positive. Since South Korea is ready to play a big role internationally, one of his hope is both South Korean education system and research programs changes more internationally.
He thinks students of South Korea also work hard so that there are lots of potentials for country development. Carsten also showed satisfaction for his team. He said he gets chances to be closer to the students while studying, so he put lots of effort and time for research in the process. He shows expectation about South Korea as a country to a dynamic and rapidly developing.
