The research team led by Prof. Hwan-soo Yoon(Dept. of Biological Sciences) discovers new photosynthetic pigment complex in marine red algae.
"Uncovering the Secrets of the Photosynthesis Evolution of Marine Red Algae"
The research team led by Prof. Hwan-soo Yoon (Dept. of Biological Sciences, SKKU) says the team discovered a new photosynthetic pigment complex of marine red algae. The team found a new linker protein that supports the pigment complex gene and the structure of the pigment complex by deciphering the genome of the unicellular marine algae Porphyridium purpureum.
The results of this research, which was conducted by the Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries, the Multi-District Genome Project, the Rural Development Administration's Bio Green 21 Project, and the National Research Foundation of Korea's Midsize Research Project, were published online on October 23 in Nature Communication: IF: 11.878.
The study provided important clues as to how red algae evolved using a broad spectrum of light in a variety of marine environments. Prof. Yoon said, "The research of marine biological genomes is a world-class field in Korea, and continuous support should be supported to lead this further." This research was conducted by Prof. Hwan-soo Yoon (Dept. of Biological Sciences, SKKU, corresponding author), Jun-mo Lee (Kyungpook National Univ. first author), Dong-seok Kim graduate student in the laboratory and conducted in a joint international study with Rutgers Univ. (New Jersey, USA).
