The contents inculde mechanisms underlying transcription/translation and expression/control of plant genes and comparing these phennomena to those dccuring in animal and microobialsystems. This course is aimed at allowing students to familiarise them with the molecular events that operate during flowering and photosynthesis, the typical physiological functions in plants.
BIO5032 Marine Ecology 3 6 Major Master/Doctor 1-4 - No
Biological dynamics of individuals, population and community in marine ecosystem will be evaluated by understanding direct and indirect interactions in marine food webs and abiotic factors that exert substantial influences on habitats of subtidal, intertidal and open ocean.
BIO5041 Population Ecology 3 6 Major Master/Doctor 1-4 - No
Experimental methods in collecting and analyzing demographic data to measure population growth and decline are overviewed. The course provides answers for how to use field techniques for measuring various demographic components : growth rate, mortality, survivorship, recruitment, fecundity, and also the information on how to apply mathematical models of population such as matrix model.
BIO5042 Community Ecology 3 6 Major Master/Doctor 1-4 - No
This cours deals with the theoretical background for how the community is organized and changed. Biotic and abiotic factors affecting population dynamics are reviewed with various habit at types. General succession models are mentioned in depth.
BIO5044 Techniques in Molecular Cell Biology 3 6 Major Master/Doctor 1-4 Korean Yes
The theoretical background and the practical applications of the cell biological methodologies will be lectured and discussed.
BIO5049 Immunological Methods 3 6 Major Master/Doctor 1-4 - No
This class offers students a good opportunity to learn the basic theories and applications of molecular and cellular immunological techniques, which are also very useful in the study of modern biochemistry, cell biology and virology. The most up to date technology will be introduced, which includes immune cell isolation and culture, production, purification and application of poly and monoclonal antibodies, qualitative and quantitative measurement of antigen·antibody interactions, a diverse application of flow cytometry, a variety of immunoassays, analysis of immune effector functions and tissue typing techniques.
BIO5050 Biology Signal Transduction 3 6 Major Master/Doctor 1-4 Korean Yes
This course is designed to offer the most advanced yet most fundamental knowledge of the information processing in the multi-cellular organisms. The students will learn in detail on the subject of cell-cell communication, the mechanism of transmembrane as well as intracellular signal transduction leading to distinct celluar responses involving specfic gene expression. A sepcial emphasis will be made regarding how extracelluar signals diverge into many signaling pathways, amplify, and then are controlled by feed-back mechanisms, to be ultimately integrated as a specific information.
BIO5060 Micobial Molecular Genetics 3 6 Major Master/Doctor 1-4 Korean Yes
Molecular mechanisms of various genetic phenomenon such as DNA replication, transcription, translation, mutagenesis and DNA repair, transposition, recombination, global regulation of prokaryotic microorganisms
BIO5070 Special Topics on Biochemistry 3 6 Major Master/Doctor 1-4 Korean Yes
This class covers general methods and their applications used for research of biochemistry. The subjects include isolation, purification, quantitation of nucleic acids, protein, lipid and carbohydrates, determination of enzyme activity, reaction kinetics, analysis of metabolisms.
BIO5073 Functional Genomics 3 6 Major Master/Doctor 1-4 - No
Functional genomics takes a more global look at the fators to determine the functional relationship genes and its functions. in addition, functional genomics is concerned with the interactions of many genes, working in concert. This course emphasize recent advances in biochip based functional genomics and principles of proteomics. Basic data preprocessing with nomalization and filtering, primary pattern analysis, and machine-learning algorithms will be discussed. Also, use of integrative managemet of biomolcular databases will be discussed.
BIO5081 Special Topics in cellular Immunology 3 6 Major Master/Doctor 1-4 Korean Yes
This course is designed to improve understanding on the mechanism of immune responses by examining interactions between cells and molecules of the immune system involved in the regulation of immune function as a natural defense system of higher organisms. Special emphasis is placed on the cellular and molecular interactions during the development and activation process for the acquisition and expression of immune function, focusing on the cytokine network which governs the immune homeostasis through the in-depth review and presentation of the up to date research articles in the field and active discussions. A new therapeutic paradigm for diseases including cancer using cell therapy and immune modulators will be introduced with their developing pipelines in the anti-cancer drug industry.
BIO5086 Glycomics 3 6 Major Master/Doctor 1-4 Korean Yes
This research aims at the elucidation of molecular mechanisms responsible for glyco-chain expression involved in the supra-biomolecular system, and contributes to the establishing of integrative glycobiology and glycomics. (1) Expression analysis of glyco-chain related genes using DNA and Proteomic microarray. (2) Studies on the molecules controlling the expression of sialic acid species
BIO5087 Glyco-cell Differentitation 3 6 Major Master/Doctor 1-4 - No
Sialic acid is transferred from CMP-sialic acid to an acceptor glycan through the catalysis of sialyltransferase. Some of glyco-chains on cellular surface are regarded to be potential signaling molecules in cellular communications. Glyco-chains are biosynthesized through the catalysis of membrane-bound glycosyltransferases. The professpr would like to address the pathological significance of glycosyltransferase function and resulting abnormalities of glyco-chain metabolism with regard to cellular differntiation. I also hope to apply our future results for developing new diagnostic means and therapeutics of the disease to our graduate students. Lecture topics are (1) Analysis on controlling mechanisms of glyco-chains through glycosyltransferases. (2) Functions of glyco-chains in the cancer biology and immune systems
